Aquaculture is the cultivation and marketing of aquatic animals and plants in a controlled environment for all as part of their life cycle. Success in aquaculture is dependent on many variables. Proper planning and a thorough understanding of basic principles make a world of difference.

Shawnee Community College (SCC) in association with the IL Manufactures Extention Center now offers two courses that form a foundation for beginning aquaculturists.


AQUA 101 - INTRODUCTION TO AQUACULTURE is a course designed to provide a basis of information for someone considering a career in aquaculture or developing a fish farming operation. The student is introduced to the history of aquaculture, business plan development, water quality issues, site and species selection, growth management, harvesting techniques and marketing of product.

AQUA 102 - AQUACULTURE is specifically designed for the aquaculturist interested in the cultivation of freshwater prawns (shrimp) in Southern Illinois. Students will learn the design and construction of ponds, water sources, water quality management, feeding regimes, harvesting and marketing of product. Students are introduced to government regulations and the application of permits.
